What is BokSmart?
The BokSmart National Rugby Safety Programme, which was officially launched on 9 July 2009, has come about as a result of an exciting partnership between the South African Rugby Union and the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Players’ Fund.
Both of these well respected rugby organisations have made a keen investment of time and effort in order to make the game safer for all participants.
Absa, one of the biggest sponsors of South African rugby, has also come on board and is the main sponsor of the BokSmart programme. Without their financial backing and support, a program of this nature would never be possible.
The goal of BokSmart is to provide rugby coaches, referees, players,
and administrators with the correct knowledge, skills, and leadership
abilities to ensure that safety and best practice principles are
incorporated into all aspects of contact rugby in South Africa.
The
program not only focuses on these basic principles, but also aims to
grow the game at grassroots level, and provide everyone in South Africa
with the opportunity of being educated to play rugby the Smart way. The
safest best practice techniques in the game are also the most
effective.
Ultimately, by instilling this mindset and providing this resource and
training, rugby will evolve in South Africa and become more appealing
to everyone. Winners play Smart Rugby!
