Trustees & Friends
The Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Fund is in the fortunate position to be able to have some of South Africa's most well-known and respected people serving as Trustees, regional representatives and Friends of the Fund.
Our two newest Trustees are 1995 World Cup winning Springbok Chester Williams, and former Sharks and Springbok loose forward Wayne Fyvie (both pictured below at our annual golf day).
Fyvie, who made his name in Durban as an inspirational Sharks flanker before winning his Springbok colours against the 1996 All Blacks, believes that the Players’ Fund is a necessity in South African rugby. “I am very honoured to have been asked to be a Trustee of the Fund," he said.
"Having been involved and done quite a bit of work for the Fund makes you realise the importance of it. When you’re a player you don’t really think of injuries, but the reality is that injuries are a very real thing. If you make it as a player, then you will have support, but there are so many rugby players out there who aren’t as lucky, and the cost associated with a catastrophic injury is heavy.”
Fyvie is a director of KwaZulu-Natal office automation company Green Office, and one of his projects has been to employ a number of disabled people in an agency that oversees the collection of empty ink and laser cartridges.
Williams is currently director of coaching at the Boland Rugby Union, a position he took up midway through the 2009 Currie Cup season. "Players such as myself gained so much out of the game so by being a Trustee of the Fund gives me an opportunity to give back," said Williams. "There’s always someone who has to get injured but the Fund makes life easier for those people."
