MORNÉ DU PLESSIS

Morné du Plessis is a director of Sail (Pty) Ltd. a company primarily engaged in the sport and leisure environment which includes high performance management, strategy development and delivery, event creation and ownership, rights commercialization and sales

He was born in Vereeniging on October 21, 1949, matriculated in 1966 and completed his national service at the Naval Gymnasium in Saldanha Bay.

He attended the University of Stellenbosch between 1968 and 1972, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree, majoring in Industrial Psychology.

He is probably better known for his national and international rugby career that spanned more than ten years. He was first selected as a Springbok in 1971.  In 1975, he was appointed Springbok captain. 

In 1995, he officially re-entered the international rugby arena as Manager of the South African national rugby team, which won the 1995 Rugby World Cup.  He retired as Springbok Manager in August 1996.

He is the Chairman of the of the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund, a fund he helped established in 1980 to provide assistance to rugby players who have sustained serious rugby injuries. 

Morné serves on the World Sports Academy that is a group of 42 world-renowned sportsmen and women who act as the electoral college for the Laureus World Sports Awards and promote the use of sport for social change throughout the world.

Morne is married to Jenny and they have three children.
