Dr Ismail Jakoet

ISMAIL JAKOET
Dr Ismail Jakoet is the Company Secretary of South African Rugby, the current World Champions in the sport of Rugby Union as well as former Champions in 1995.
He was born in Cape Town in 1948 and matriculated in 1965, whereupon he qualified as a medical doctor with an MBChB from the University of Cape Town in 1973.
After graduating from the University of Pretoria with the degree of MSc in Sports Medicine in 1993, he was employed by SA Rugby as its first Medical Manager, a position he occupied until the end of 2006.
Further qualifications such as a Diploma in Labour law from the Institute of Management and Technology (2005) and Certificate in Leadership Development (2006) from the University of South Africa saw Dr Jakoet entering a new career when he became the Company Secretary of SA Rugby in January 2007 after 1 year of acting in this position.
Dr Jakoet currently serves as a trustee of the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Player’s Fund, which was established many years ago to provide assistance to rugby players who have sustained serious rugby injuries.
He also serves as a member of the International Rugby Board’s Anti Doping Advisory Committee and holds the position of Chairman of its Therapeutic Usage Exemption Committee.
Dr Jakoet is internationally recognised for his role in Anti Doping, currently serving as a Board member of the SA Institute for Drug Free Sport and having the distinction of being its founding Chairman in 1997. He also served the World Anti Doping Agency in numerous capacities, the most noteworthy being as a member of the very first Independent Observer Team at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
Dr Jakoet is married to Yasmien, they have 3 sons and a daughter and are the proud grandparents of 4 grandchildren.
