MIKE MEINTJES
Mike was born in Durban and schooled all over South Africa, starting in Pretoria, then Mafeking, followed by Sea Point and finally matriculating at Wynberg Boys HS in 1950.
He then joined the Standard Bank of SA Ltd in 1951 and retired 43 years later as the Area Manager for Personal Banking for central Cape Town.
Mike has been a member of the 7th Green and Sea Point Scout group for 69 years, at one time as Scoutmaster. He is an Honorary Life member of Hamilton Sea Point Rugby Football Club having joined in 1952.
He is also an Honorary Life Member of the Mountain Club of SA and now rambles on the berg each Tuesday with A>É Gardiner’s Bush Bucks. He was a Gencom member of the Mountain club for 10 years, doubling up as PRO.
Now he arranges all the work meets at the clubs hut property on Table Mountain.
He is a member of the Congregational Church in Pinelands having transferred from the Sea Point congregation when he moved to Pinelands in 1965.
He was a founder member of the Players’ Fund and as Trustee still helps with odd tasks and hospital visitations when required to do so. He firmly believes in the Fund mandate and is an active member of the Assistance Committee that reviews requests for assistance.
For 32 years Mike worked in the office and the player’s dressing room at the Western Province Rugby Union. This was a fun filled experience for him.
Mike loves hiking, camping and gardening. He has been married to Irene for more than 50 years and has 4 lovely children scattered across the world and the “cherry on the top”, seven special pals in the form of grandchildren.
He says it has always been a true pleasure and privilege to be involved with Morné du Plessis and the Players’ Fund team.
