"Guess the Score" raises record amount

20-Jan-2010

The "Guess the Score" competition for Newlands Rugby Stadium suite-holders and their guests raised a record amount for the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Players' Fund during the 2009 season - and the good news is that the money is still coming in!

Fund volunteer Ian Appleton has run the popular competition for the past five years, during which time more than R250,000 has been raised for seriously injured rugby players.

Currently around 70 suites take part in the competition, which sees holders and their guests predict the score of the Stormers or Western Province match they are attending. If somebody predicts correctly, they win the kitty in that suite; if nobody guesses the score, the proceeds are then donated to the Fund.

Appleton, 71, a longtime Hamilton RFC supporter who worked as an accountant for UK clubs London Scottish and London Harlequins for six years, retired in 2003 and began the "Guess the Score" competition in 2005.

He now spends his match days visiting suites and ensuring that the competition runs smoothly. "We're currently on R64 398 for the 2009 season and there's at least another R3000 that still has to come in," says Appleton.

"I would like to thank everybody for all their support they have given myself and the Fund over the past five years and I'm hoping that this year will be just as successful, if not better. We are aiming to get even more suiteholders involved in 2010."

If you are a Newlands suiteholder and would like to take part in the competition and help to raise funds for the Players’ Fund, please phone the Fund offices on (021) 659 5615.
