THE RUCK AND MAUL

THE MAUL
If a player is unable to pass the ball before or during contact and he cant beat the opponent, he has no option other than to handle the situation by remaining on his feet. When the ball carrier cannot pass out the ball then a maul is formed.

There must be at least three players to form a maul, i.e. the ball carrier, the supporter and the defender, all of whom are on their feet.

The ball carrier will turn to keep the ball away from the opponent and the supporter will ensure possession by connecting onto the ball. If any other supporters join the maul they will join on both sides of the opponents but ensuring they leave the first supporter free. The supporters drive forwards to move the contact line back, forcing the opponents to fall back.

Safety in the maul - remember:
Chin up, eyes open and focus on the target area The ball carrier must keep the ball away from the opposition
The ball carrier must not drop his head, and must keep his spine straight in the drive The ball must be made available for the first supporter
Make contact with the shoulders and bind Do not ground the mall
Communication is important

THE RUCK

Once a player hits the ground with the ball after being tackled, if he has been unable to execute a pass, a ruck is formed. To form a ruck the ball must be on the ground, and two players, one from each team are bound over the ball. In order to control the ball, the ball carrier should move with the turn of the tackle so that he will fall on his side ensuring his body is between the ball and the goal line of the opponents. After he has fallen he places the ball close to his stomach and lets go of it immediately.

Safety in the ruck - remember:

When the ball carrier is brought to the ground he drives forwards and drags the defender behind him, creating space to fall and place the ball Head must not be lower than hips
It is imperitive that players learn to protect themselves in a ruck and should protect their team mates Do not jump onto players
