Friday the 29th September finally arrived and after many weeks of planning, 124 intrepid golfers met at the Bloemfontein Golf Club to begin a day of fund raising for Rugby’s Caring Hands – The Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund. Others would arrive later and join in the evening and presentations, which included auctions professionally, run by Jeandre Smit plus a fun “heads and tails” game which had the guests up and moving with the flip of the coin.

With the Springbok vs Wallabies test the following day, rugby, golf and fun were definitely on the agenda.

The golf was played in wonderful weather which made for a fantastic day, until 4pm when a storm arrived with strong winds and some much needed rain. Before the golfers needed to run for cover, the storm had passed and a balmy evening with clear skies heralded in the end to a most successful, well-organised and enjoyable day, with the Bloemfontein Golf Club being the perfect hosts.

All the golf teams had photos taken with our rearing to go Springbok mascot – Bokkie, again highlighting the noticeable rugby gees.

Our sincere thanks must go to the major sponsors being FNB, Toyota and Wesbank, who added colour to the registration area and golf course, in the form of banners and a few beautiful demo vehicles. Blue Ribbon Bakeries also ensured that every golfer had enough “sandwich squares” to braai “toasties” over the coals pre or post test match the following day.

Plenty of sponsored wet holes along the course made sure that the field of golfers were kept hydrated, with the halfway house providing a yummie “bordkos” to keep the energy levels up.

A final sincere thank you, has to go to Wilna Jurack from the Freestate Rugby Union and Jean Brider, regional representative of the Players’ Fund for their efforts in organising such a successful golf day.
