On Saturday 15 October 2016 the Players4Players team of Chris Rood, Mark Kritzinger, Murray Turner and Gary Fouche proved once again why they are official friends of the Players’ Fund. The 7th annual event in support of the Players’ Fund was a formal dinner hosted in the Pool Room at Kelvin Grove, Newlands, Cape Town. With a very humorous tone set by Rob van Vuuren as the MC, guests were encouraged to open their hearts and wallets in support of the Players’ Fund who has been supporting seriously injured rugby players in South Africa for 36 years.
The message of what the Players’ Fund does for injured players was brought under the spotlight by a heartfelt and honest speech by Gerhard van der Wath, who spoke of his return to his home town of Clanwilliam after 11 weeks in Cape Town hospitals following his disabling injury on the rugby field in 2011. Gerhard is currently studying through UNISIA and with the help of a very supportive family and community, is proving that he has big goals and will stop at nothing to attain them.
An astonishing R140K was raised through this event which is growing from strength to strength over 7 years which was elevated by the pledge of support from SASFIN who sponsored this year’s event.
This is the positive difference a rugby community can make when all standing together to ensure that no one is ever left on the side-lines and forgotten. If you are involved with a rugby club or have a passion for the game, why not consider hosting an event in your own community or club in support of Rugby’s Caring Hands?
